Rough Cocklebur (Common Cocklebur) Xanthium strumarium
This weed will grow even in the middle of a drought and can reach 6 feet tall. Flower is very small in 1/4" wide balls. Seedpod is about 1" long covered in barbs.

Similar Species

Spiny Cocklebur Xanthium spinosum
Single stalk without branches.  Long narrow leaves with sharp lobes, light veins. Long yellow spines at base of leaves. Narrow fruit pod yellow with red hooks. Fewer hooks than Xanthium strumarium.
