Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura

This big black bird eats carrion and loves road kill.  They hunt and glide solitary but roost together, sometimes in large groups.  If they are on the ground that does not mean there is a dead animal.  They just like to have meetings.

Photos taken in Taylor County, March 2005, June 2006, September 2006, April 2007

(Native of Texas)

Other Species in My Area

American Black Vulture (Black Vulture) Cathartes atratus

Like Turkey Vulture except: gray head, base of primary feathers are white so makes a patch instead of a stripe, hunts in groups.

(Native of Texas)
