The distinctions between frogs and toads is mostly by appearance and habits, not by genetics.  Frogs are more aquatic and brighter colored.  Toads have bumpy, thicker skin (often brown for camouflage) which allows them to stay out of the water longer.  Toads tend to burrow.

Red Spotted Toad Bufo punctatus

The orange spots can become less conspicuous as the toad ages.  Adults are less than 3" long.
