Crow Poison (False Garlic) Nothoscordum bivalve

White clusters of 1/2" wide flowers on 6-10" tall stalk.  Long narrow leaves at base.  The bulb does not have the onion/garlic smell or taste.  These bulbs grow in large colonies.

Wild Onion Allium canadense

Loose clusters of 1/4" tall, 1/2" wide, papery white flowers with pink mid stripe on 6-10" tall stalk.  Small leaves at base.  The bulb can be eaten like a mild onion.  Crushed bulb can relive the sting of bees and wasps.  This bulb does not grow in large colonies.

Drummond Wild Onion Allium drummondii

Loose, pink/red clusters of 3/8" wide and 1/4" tall, papery flowers on 6-10" tall stalk.  Small leaves at base.  The bulb can be eaten like a mild onion.  Crushed bulb can relive the sting of bees and wasps.

Fire Lily (Orange Lily) Lilium bulbiferum

Orange flower is 4-5" wide.  Plant stalk is 2-3 feet tall with long leaves radiating up the stalk.  Bulb is edible.

Similar Species

? Common Name Lilium dauricum (Lilium pennsylvanicum, Lilium spectabilis)

Orange flower with yellow highlights and dark spots (petals can be red, pink, or white).  Base of petals are pinched so the flower looks penetrated instead of a cup.  Plant grows 2-3 feet tall.  Cultivated in the West around the 1780's.

Tiger Lily Lilium tigrinum

Orange with dark spots.  4 foot tall.  Bulb is edible.  Plant has multiple flower branches at top.  Used in many "medical" applications.  Pollen is poisonous.

Asparagus Fern Asparagus densiflorus

This popular houseplant is not a true fern, nor is it asparagus.  The stiff branches have small thorns at each junction.  The roots have water sacks that help when you forget to water.  Lots of light produces 1/8" flowers and 1/4" berries, which turn red.

Amaryllidaceae - Amaryllis family

Rain Lily Cooperia drummondii

Flower about 1" wide sits on top of a single stalk about 12" high.  Small leaves at the base.  Flower grows after spring and summer rains.  Three lobed seed pod is about 1/2" wide.
