Onagraceae - Evening Primrose family

Hartweg's Sundrops (Western Primrose, Desert Evening Primrose) Calylophus hartwegii ssp. pubescens

Locally called buttercup, flower is 2"-3" wide, fading to orange as it curls up.  Flowers open late afternoon and fades as the next day gets hot.  Narrow, corrugated pods, 1"-2" long, are called hypanthium, the floral tube with the ovary at its base.  Leaves are highly variable, up to 1 1/2" long.  These plants reach about 16" tall and are wider than tall.  Some years this plant can cover fields.

Yellow Texas Primrose (Evening Primrose, Sundrops) Calylophus drummondii

(native to USA, but not Texas)

 

Square-bud Primrose (Halfshrub Sundrops, Drummond Sundrops, Beach Evening Primrose) Calylophus  berlandieri  (C.drummondianus)

Flower very similar.  Buds have square crossection.  Leaves are very long and narrow.  Stem is upright with flower at top.  Grows to 6" tall.

 

Hartweg's Sundrops (Western Primrose, Desert Evening Primrose) Calylophus hartwegii ssp. fendleri  --  ssp. filifolius --  ssp. maccartii

Flower very similar.

 

Lavendarleaf Evening Primrose (Lavendarleaf  Sundrops) Calylophus  lavandulifolius

Flower very similar.  Plant grows 8" tall.

Flutter-Mill (Ozark-sundrop, Missouri Primrose, Bigfruit Evening-Primrose, Buttercup) Oenothera macrocarpa (O. missouriensis)

The name describes this flower well. It's petals flutter in a light breeze.  Flower is 3-4" wide.  Plant is 12-18" tall.  Leaves are grayish and 4-5" long

Oxalidaceae - Wood-sorrel family

Yellow Wood-sorrel Oxalis dillenii

Flower about 3/16"-1/2" wide depending on water.   Leaves are like "3-leaf clover" that fold down at dusk.  Pod about 1/2" long.  Plant grows in shade, 2"-18" tall.

Rock Flax Linum rupestre

Flower about 1/2" wide.  Main stem has short, narrow leaves with dark glands at base.

Fringed Puccoon Lithospermum incisum

Bright yellow flower is about 1/2" wide with a 1 1/2" long tube.  Plant grows to about 12" tall.  Long thin strap-like leaves.  The roots are used to die wool red.

Oleaceae - Olive family

Redbud Menodora heterophylla

Light yellow flower is about 1" wide with a 1 1/2" long tube can have 5 or 6 petals.  Buds are scarlet red.  Low growing plant to about 8" tall.  Crowded leaves can be entire or deeply cut.  Seed pods are like round peas and the top half opens to release the seeds.

Acanthaceae - Acanthus family

Anisacanthus (Desert Honeysuckle) Anisacanthus wrightii var. quadrifidus

Orange flower about 2" long with four petals arranged one and three.  Woody stems grow 3-4 feet long.
