Daisy-like Flowers - Rounded Ends

Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis, Goldenwave)Coreopsis tinctoria

Deep golden-yellow flower about 1"-1 1/2" wide.  Center is maroon.  Tip of petal has 3 lobes with the center the longest.  These plants grow 2-3 feet tall and can cover roadsides and fields.  Leaves are pinnately compound, narrow and clumped at stem, but are wider than Thelesperma.  In a wet spring these flowers will cover roadsides and ungrazed fields.

Petals can be solid yellow, or occasionally solid maroon.

 


 

                

I am still learning to identify this species.  This may be a wilder variation of the Coreopsis tinctoria.

Greenthread Thelesperma filifolium

Golden-yellow flower about 2" wide.  At the base of the flower, there are two types of phyllary, one is short and green, the other is red and long.  These plants grow to about 2 feet tall and can cover roadsides and fields.  Leaves are pinnately compound, very narrow and widely spaced.

Inner Phyllaries: united 1/4 to 1/2 their length

Outer Phyllaries: herbaceous (of a soft texture, as green leaves)

Disk Corolla Lobes: often linear

 

Coreopsis

Inner Phyllaries: separate or nearly so, united at base to form a cup

Outer Phyllaries: very different in appearance from inner phyllaries

Disk Corolla Lobes: triangular to ovate

Similar Species

Navajo Tea Thelesperma simplicifolium

Smaller disk.  Base of flower is narrow.  Both phyllaries are short.  Thread-like leaves.  Leaves are pinnately compound, very narrow and clumped at stem.

Yellow Daisy (Plains Yellow Daisy) Tetraneuris scaposa

Flower about 2 1/2" wide and can have 12-31 petals.  Orangey-yellow center forms a low dome.  Petals age to white and curl under.  Grass-like leaves are at the base only.  Flower heads are about 1 foot high.  Blooms March through May, sporadically through the summer and then again in September through October.

Similar Species

Fineleaf Fournerved Daisy Tetraneuris linearifolia

Annual with branched, conspicuously leafy stems.  Ray flowers are 5-10mm long, quite variable from 6-22.  Phyllaries 2.5-4.5mm long.  The bloom time is from Mar-May, re-branching and producing additional heads to Jul.

Bitterweed (Fine-leaved Sneezeweed, Yellowdicks, Bitter Sneezeweed) Helenium amarum

Flower 3/4"-1" wide. Petals have 3 lobes, tend to droop, and usually have gaps between them.  Orangey-yellow center is flatish.  Grass-like leaves are at the base only.  Flower heads are about 6"-8" high.  Honey from this plant is bitter.

Engelmann Daisy (Cut-leafed Daisy) Engelmannia pinnatifida

Bright yellow flower about 2" wide with "pinched" petal tip.  The 8 petals look tacked to the center with thread.  The center starts off without the tiny flowers so has a "green eye".  As the center flowers age, they dry out to brown showing the green base.  Petals curl under as the day heats or becomes dark.  Lower leaves are 4" long and hairy.  Upper leaves are smaller, growing halfway up stalk.  Plant grows 2-3 feet high and can be found in large groupings.  Eaten by livestock.

Awnless Bush Sunflower (Bush Sunflower) Simsia calva

Bright yellow flower about 1" wide with golden center and "pinched" petal tip.  Hairy leaves are opposite.  Upright to sprawling plant grows to about 2 feet tall.  Leaves are eaten by deer.

Lyreleaf Greeneyes (Chocolate Daisy, Chocolate Flower) Berlandiera lyrata

This plant smells like milk chocolate.  2" wide flower grow out of a 3/4" wide green velvety pad.  The petals appear to be tacked down with red thread and have a "pinched" tip.  The petal backs have dark red veins.  The center flowers are red each with a yellow spike.  Variable shaped leaves are 6"-8" long.  Plant grows to about 18" tall.  Native Americans may have used this plant to season food.

Butterweed Senecio glabellus

Flower 1/2"-3/4" wide.  Petals have two small lobes at tip.  Plant shown is about 10" tall.  Leaves are mostly at base and deeply divided with the end section wider than long.

Horseherb (Straggler Daisy) Calyptocarpus vialis

Flower about 1/4" wide.  Shade plant and ground cover forms mounds of 8-10" tall.  This plant is one of the first flowers of spring and grows until hit by frost.
