Onagraceae - Evening Primrose family

Pink Evening Primrose (Pinkladies) Oenothera speciosa

Flower about 2" wide and come in white, pink, and rose petal colors.  Plant grows to 18" tall mounds and can cover roadside ditches.

Malvaceae - Mallow family

Wine Cup (Purple Poppymallow) Callirhoe involucrata

Reddish purple flowers (sometimes white or striped) with large white circle or pentagon at the petal base, solitary, about 1"-2 1/2" wide. Compound pistil with red thread-like stigmas. Anthers light yellow or cream. 5 lobed calyx with 3 bracts near the base. Leaves variable, deeply lobed, 5-7 times, variable lobe widths. Upright to reclined stems to 30" long. Stipule (appendage at base of leaf stem) to 5/8" long and about as wide, ovate to ovate lanceolate. Grows in sand.

This beautiful flower is rare in Taylor county. It was my Grandmother's favorite, so finding it growing on our land brings back nice feelings.

Fringed Poppy Mallow Callirhoe digitata

Red purple flowers on 6" long stalks. Petals are fringed and have a little white at base. Anthers pink. No bracts below the calyx. Leaves variable, deeply lobed, 3-8 times, linear. Plant looks leafless.

Annual Winecup (Tall Poppymallow) Callirhoe leiocarpa

Flowers red-purple to light pink with a little white at the petal base, 1 1/2"-2" wide, solitary.  Anthers white. Calyx with 5-lobes, no bracts, not hairy (or just a few hairs). Mature fruits 3/16"-1/4" wide. Erect to about 3 feet tall with a slender taproot. Stems not hairy or have a few stiff flat hairs.  Swollen root.

Palmleaf Poppymallow Callirhoe pedata

Flowers reddish purple, sometimes white or pink, solitary or in loose\ clusters. Calyx with 5-lobes, no bracts. Mature fruits 1/4"-5/8" wide.  Upright to reclined stems over 36" long.  Grows in limestone outcroppings.

Texas Poppymallow Callirhoe scabriuscula

Reddish purple flowers with no white at the petal base. Petals fold back. Anthers are dark red and cone shaped. Calyx with 5-lobes (lanceolate, pointed, 3 nerved), 3 bracts (linear) that are separated from the calyx. Upper leaves mostly entire. Lower leaves deeply lobed 3-5 times. Stipule (appendage at base of leaf stem) lance-linear. Stem hairy (8 rayed hairs). Plant erect to about 18" tall. Endangered.

Geraniaceae - Geranium family

Texas Stork's-bill (Storks-bill) Erodium texanum

Flower 3/4" to 1" wide. The magenta color is similar to Wine Cup. Plants are ground hugging or in 12" high mounds. The seedpods have 2" long beaks. The seeds are attached at the base with a long tail up the beak. When mature the seed pops out and the tail corkscrews sending the seed flying. Geranium-like leaves are up to 1" long.
